Role: Senior Mechanical Engineer
Team: Mechanical engineering team, display engineer, RF engineers, antenna engineers, product test team, operations engineers, manufacturing partner (BYD), hardware manager, document configuration management, audio engineer, and product quality
Timeline: Jan - Sep 2014
Tools used: CATIA, tolerance analysis spreadsheet, MoldFlow analysis
1. The Challenge
I was tasked with leading the design and development of multiple individual components from concept to production. The parts needed to meet the Lumia 830 product requirements for functionality, reliability, visual quality, and safety.
2. My Tasks
1. Lead the design integration of the window+display module to the mobile phone by working with display engineer to meet product requirements for reliability, manufacturability, and safety
2. Design display window, artwork, and adhesive for assembly
3. Design the battery cover assembly including the wireless charging receiver module and audio associated components
4. Design front facing camera sub-assembly
5. Manage the verification testing of fully assembled to resolve design, assembly, and product quality issues
3. My Contributions
1. Using CATIA, I designed the front glass window, artwork including all artwork layers, front speaker mesh and foam gasket, and the window adhesive. I coordinated with the display engineer regarding component clearances, display grounding, fit and assembly, and prototype planning and scheduling. I used the Nokia designed spreadsheet to calculate tolerance analysis between the window+display module to the mobile phone chassis.
2. I also designed the CAD models for the plastic battery cover, wireless charging module, and audio mesh and sealing gasket
3. In addition, I designed the CAD models for the front facing camera module which included a FPC, electrical conducting gaskets, board to board connector, and metal stiffener.
4. I worked continuously with project team members to build fully functional prototypes. Then we tested and verified the above components until they met product requirements for functionality, reliability, and safety.
In total, I designed and managed the development of at least 13 individual components from concept to production on the Lumia 830 mobile phone. The development process included creating the CAD models and respective detailed drawings, performing tolerance analysis', hand building prototypes, and troubleshooting issues with the product test team.
4. The Results
The Lumia 830 met the specified product requirements for functionality, reliability, and safety. It was launched in September of 2014.
I received the award for Recognition of Outstanding Work on the display integration by the program manager.
