Mechanics project manager for the Lumia 900 from concept to production
Winner of "Best of CES" smartphone 2012
1. The Challenge
I was tasked with leading the design and development of the Lumia 900 mobile phone from concept phase to production launch. The phone needed to meet the Lumia 900 product defined requirements for functionality, reliability, visual quality, and safety.
2. My Tasks
I developed and managed the project schedule via the product development life cycle. I met with cross functional teams to define the target dates for design reviews, file releases, protobuild events, travel, and milestone reviews.
I scheduled and administered meetings with overseas manufacturing supplier. I discussed scheduled delivery dates, files releases, and mechanical design related issues.
Managed engineering resources to support project workload. I met regularly with my manager to review resources work balance. If project work required additional resources, I received mechanical engineering support.
Worked with technical lead to address mechanical design issues and coordinate design review meetings. I worked closely with the technical lead to address risk items and other design related issues.
Resolved issues between mechanical design and other departments. I met with audio, antenna, RF, and operations engineers to discuss their requirements and how to implement into the design of the product.
Mitigated risk items.
3. My Contributions
Scheduled project status meetings, design reviews, and overseas supplier conference calls
Recorded and updated notes in OneNote
Managed the project schedule and deliverables for each milestone event in the development cycle
Managed the status of revolving resources during the course of the project
4. The Results
The Lumia 900 was the first uni-body design with a permanently fixed battery to be developed in San Diego. We started and completed a functional unit for CES in 11 months.
At CES 2012, the Lumia 900 won Best of CES smartphone award
