Role: Lead Mechanical Sustainment Engineer IV
Team: Mechanical engineers, quality assurance, sustainment team, manufacturing managers, and manufacturing supervisors
Timeline: Jun - Jul 2023
Tools used: Inventor, Agile, OneNote
1. The Challenge
I was tasked to resolve a reported manufacturing issue with the assembly of the LQ IP Interface product. Manufacturing team reported operators were struggling with assembling the top metal cover to the metal chassis. They requested for an assessment and resolution to this issue.
2. My Tasks
Week 1 - 2: Observed the issue in real time with the manufacturing team. Met with manufacturing and quality assurance team to collect and understand more details.
Week 3 - 4: Met with mechanical engineering team to discuss design history. Then reviewed CAD models and dimensional inspection reports.
Week 5 - 6: Created a plan for providing a solution and communicated to manufacturing and quality team
Week 7 - 8: Executed plan and resolved issue
3. My Contributions
From a mechanical engineering perspective, I inspected the physical parts for quality issues; observed operator execution for abnormal or incorrect assembly procedures; and personally reviewed dimensional inspection reports for dimensions that may be out of specifications.
I identified the issue and shared my report with the manufacturing, quality, and sustainment teams.
I performed a tolerance analysis and modified the necessary parts to resolve the issue.
4. The Results
Modifying the plastic faceplate and the metal chassis to remove interference resolved the issue 100%.
